And they're off!

Melbourne’s annual Spring Racing Carnival is just around the corner and the excitement has begun to mount in the lead up to “the race that stops the nation”, Flemington’s Melbourne Cup.

More than just horses, the spring racing season is a celebration of our city’s unique culture and style. The most difficult decision for many attending a Spring Carnival event is often not which horse to back, but what to outfit wear.

Chris Edwards, General Manager of Oscar Hunt tailors in the heart of the CBD, and Daniela Scavetti, lead buyer for beloved, local boutique Esse, in Camberwell, are already busily helping people to prepare.

Oh

This season is all about lace for the ladies. “There is always a bit of lace but there seems to be a lot this year, as well as florals, which is not unusual for spring,” says Daniela. “Colour-wise, lavender, different shades of blue, green and teal are all trending”.

In a break from tradition, hats are not as popular this spring. Rather, many women are opting for a subtler touch with fascinators, headbands and small crowns.

“Don’t forget to prepare for the weather!” says Daniela, “We always get really busy on the day or the day before with people coming in looking for a cardigan. Keep a look out for a nice jacket so you won’t be left freezing.”

Lighter colours are also popular with men this season.

“We are seeing a lot of beige and tan,” says Chris. “These colours are great to dress up or dress down and are perfect for when the sun comes out. We also like pinstripes. People often think of pinstripes as some sort of power play, but worn in a lighter shade of blue, for example, they can be a great option”.

Oscar Hunt

“At Oscar Hunt we recommend a light-weight double breasted suit for spring, in a light weight wool or linen,” adds Chris.

“In terms of finishing your suit, we recommend paying attention to the small things – ties, pocket squares, hats and shoes. These little details can make a lot of difference in taking a look to the next level.”
